December 2015 - End of Term Teaching Reflection

Dr. Browning's Year 10 Chemistry Class

It has been a pleasure teaching part of the year group this term in Chemistry! A chance to really get to know more of the students in Year 10 and be part of their IGCSE journey. I have also been waiting to try teaching one particular unit in the IGCSE Chemistry course in a very different way. Teaching the Chemical Calculations topic to Year 10 students is always an interesting experience, every student comes equip with some level of Mathematical competence and an ability to apply that in a very abstract context. Differentiating to such a vast range of students can be difficult in this topic and therefore this year I decided to flip the learning so that students dictate their own pace. Through adopting a student centred approach with diagnostic learning checks, I became free to scaffold learning and offer help to those needing it whilst the students who are particularly adept with numeracy are not held back and can even engage in enrichment activities that extend beyond the scope of the syllabus.

In outline, the entire Chemical Calculations topic was converted to a Tackk presentation (an online scrolling presentation: https://tackk.com/emcwf7) and broken into different sections with embedded video clips and an accessible practice question resource bank with answers all uploaded into a shared google drive folder. Students were given the opportunity to master each topic before moving on, practicing as much as they felt they needed to gain confidence with the material. Following key sections in the unit, I also integrated google question forms as checkpoints that when submitted by students the forms would come straight to me to mark and diagnose any areas that needed further teaching and practice before students could move on to the next section.

Through having the general concepts covered in the video clips, I was able to spend more time explaining concepts to those who needed help and trouble shoot misconceptions. Furthermore, as the checkpoints were completed by students, I could move them around the classroom in different seating arrangements to generate collaboration between students working at a similar pace and also strategically position experts with those who would benefit from peer support and teaching. The seating plan was changed every lesson and students could see which section their peers had reached and therefore ask them for support. Being the first cohort to come through Year 10 with iPads has given this opportunity to completely personalise the learning. Allowing student centred mastery of ideas before moving on and giving me the opportunity to offer 1-1 support in lessons when needed. There is certainly a wealth of research that supports this approach to learning clearly showing increases in achievement.

During the course of the unit, I asked students complete an evaluation of how they felt the topic was going and whether they felt the approach was working for them. The feedback was very positive and the students also came up with some good ideas and questions to refine and improve the approach. A selection of their comments are shown below:

So far I think it's really good because it's more independent learning and it's also fair because everyone goes at their own pace

it's really good! I get to work at my own pace and I get private-ish tutoring on the topics I don't understand. I think there should also be a backup plan though, in case the wifi breaks down then we won't have a lesson.

While I believe this is a great method to learn this particular topic allowing us more freedom and letting us go at our own pace, I think that at the end we should have two lessons of quickly covering the content of the topic, i.e. A couple revision lessons for the purpose of consolidation. Otherwise, I foresee the success of this teaching method for this particular topic, which it is well suited to.

It helps me move at my own pace and if I'm not sure with something I can just ask, when we learn at the same pace I will feel guilty of interrupting the class

In conclusion, I feel that for this particular topic the approach has worked really well. The Students who are less confident in their own ability to learn needed more support and this can be given due to the freedom afforded by the video clips that the other students can learn from. I also ensured that periodically we had lessons where topics were consolidated and the class worked together - some individuals certainly seem to take comfort in being led through the topic by the teacher. As learners, I think it is unreasonable to assume that these students can make a sudden change from being in a teacher led to a student led classroom without some form of cognitive dissonance. Also, I imagine that for students who are more easily distracted they would find it hard to direct their own learning throughout an entire lesson - so it is important to have the personalised learning in chunks - teacher led expositions at the start, mid point and end of a lesson would help. For next time, I will also try and make some of the videos myself for the Tackk and even plan to have some of the Year 10 students prepare some as a revision exercise. The class have their end of topic test in the next few weeks so further evaluation of the success of the approach can be made then.

Treasure Island Musical

It is great to hear that so many Year 10 students are taking part in the school production. Please note that tickets are on sale now. They can be bought from Ms Devi on the sixth floor and the Drama department on the fourth floor.

Message from Mr Rankin (drama):
This production is the Asian Premiere of this Broadway bound Musical. This promises to be an exciting, thrilling and swashbuckling adventure. Based on the incredible story by Robert Louis Stevenson this musical is an enjoyable interpretation of this classic coming of age tale. How far will people go for treasure and riches?

Dates for the shows are the 1st to the 4th of December, using the main stage in the Grand Hall starting at 6.pm. Tickets are an incredible low price of 20RM each.

Come and support a wonderful cast and have a fantastic time at the Theatre.

Hope to see you there!

Year 10 Student Leaders

Last week, the newly appointed Year 10 student leaders had their first development days in role. This included sessions at school on items such as ethical leadership, followed by a gala dinner, an overnight hotel stay and further training and teamwork development activities on Saturday. Miss Newton structured a great program which left students feeling confident and excited about the prospect of leading change in at GIS this year. Here are a few pictures of the development days:

As a side note, one of the student leaders, Ashleigh Poh, could not make the leadership training sessions last week due to the previous commitment of leading the school's Tennis ambitions at the Fobisia Tennis Tournament at the National Tennis Centre in Jerudong, Brunei. Impressively, Ashleigh was the first under-15 qualifier and even made the newspaper!

Year 10 Camp Reflection

“We do not learn from experience … we learn from reflecting on experience.” - American philosopher John Dewey.

Reflection is widely regarded as the most important part of the learning process. Following a week at camp, I would certainly encourage all of the Year 10 students to take some time to reflect on their experience over the next week. Today in tutor time, students completed an evaluation of the trip and will be looking at an experiential learning ladder later in the week to identify what skills they have used / developed during the trip.

As head of Year 10, I was really impressed by the number of students who pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and with the support of their peers, overcame fears. Over the course of the week students experienced caving, white water rafting and high ropes activities in the 'Mountain school'. Photo's from the camp will be added to the folder here over the next few days.

Thanks for supporting the camp trip this year!

General Update - CAMP / Student Leadership Applications!

As always, it has been a busy week for the Year 10 students. With the camp trip emerging on the horizon most of the year group have sorted indemnity forms and been sourcing items from the kit lists. Similarly to last year, I have made a shared FAQ sheet to deal with any questions about the trip:

This week, the students were also given some time and advice from tutors to write applications for the student leadership positions.  Just the process of writing an application is a particularly useful experience and so all students were encouraged to do this. Trying to articulate their personal strengths and qualities is not always an easy task. The student leadership positions are particularly sort after in Year 10 and the selection process that was outlined in an assembly by Miss Newton is particularly rigorous to ensure the right students are chosen. More information about the process can be found on the leadership blog:

If you should have any questions or concerns regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me: browning.m@gardenschool.edu.my

Welcome Back Year 10!

I just wanted to say welcome back to you all and I hope that you have had a good first few days and started to settle into Year 10. If there are any problems with timetables and options or if you have any concerns/questions about anything please speak to your tutors or come and see me next week.

As some of you will have seen, we have a number of new students in the year group. If you find any new students in your classes or see them at break and lunch, I am sure that you will be welcoming, helpful and inclusive. With the new classes and subjects you have this year, Year 10 affords a great opportunity for you all to start expanding your social circles.

A couple of key reminders for the week ahead:

+ Indemnity forms for camp should be completed asap (there is a paper copy too that I will bring to tutor rooms on Tuesday if you have not had it yet)

+ Student leadership assembly on Wednesday - Miss Newton will outline how the application process works for Year 10.

Enjoy the long weekend and I will see you Tuesday.

July 2015 Holiday Time!

Now that the school year has finally finished the Year 9 students can have a well deserved rest and I wish all of those going away for the holidays a safe and enjoyable trip. Please let me know if you are doing something particularly exciting, I have already heard from a few students and was amazed to find that Kotoko from 9P had been to Japan for a Goal Keepers training camp.

Please follow the link below for more details:

On reflection it has been a hugely successful year for so many of the students and I have been really pleased to see the academic progress in the end of year reports and equally as important, many of the year group have made real personal growth in the less measurable qualities such as confidence and emotional intelligence.

I have certainly enjoyed getting to know the year group this year and look forward to supporting the students as they take their next step towards their IGCSEs in Year 10. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate in contacting me. Kind regards, Dr. Browning

IMPORTANT EXAM REVISION/PREPARATION RESOURCES

I have asked the different faculties at school to share links to exam revision / preparation documents with me so that they can all be centralized here. These should be extremely useful in helping the students realize their full potential in the end of Year exams.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents that these exams should be seen as an opportunity for students to see where they are in their learning and what areas they could improve in. The process of sitting the exams itself is also very important as this gives the students insight into the expectations and protocol of formal exams so that they are better prepared for the IGCSE's in the coming years. Students who have entered GIS in Term 3 of Year 9 WILL NOT be expected to sit the end of year exams. During the exam sessions, new students will be given activities to help identify which topics they need additional support with.

Year 9 Internal Examinations

Today the Year 9 students were given their timetables for the upcoming internal exams. I have attached these details below too. In fact, a large number of our students have already started their IGCSE exams this term with language oral exams happening last week. This will obviously be a challenging time for most students and to help support Year 9, I have planned a number of activities for tutor times to help them prepare for and cope with the exams. Each Year 9 group will be given advice on making an effective/realistic revision plan, reminded of the different strategies that they can use to revise and also have sessions that give advice on coping with the stress induced by exams.

If any students or parents have further concerns or would like additional advice, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kindest Regards, Dr. Browning

F1 in Schools Competition

March 18th saw our inaugural GIS F1 in Schools event. All year 9 students have been working hard in their Design Technology lessons in an attempt to be crowned the GIS champions and get the chance to represent the school at regional and National finals later in the year. F1 in Schools is an international design and engineering competition where students have to form teams and design and race a scale wooden F1 car. Alongside this they learn about business plans, marketing, design and presentation skills.

On Wednesday we had a fantastic showcase of their work. 29 teams raced, presented, displayed and spoke to a range of judges about what they had learnt over the previous months. With special visitors from Sepang circuit also popping by to see all the hard work, everyone who attended was thoroughly impressed by the quality of work and enthusiasm showed.

The winners were announced during assembly on Friday:

1st place:  Neon

 2nd place: Alpha Eaglez

3rd place: Phantohm Riders

All teams now get the chance to represent GIS in the regional events later this year.

IGCSE Options Forms!

Well done to the vast majority of Year 9 students and parents! Following all of the IGCSE options events that have taken place over this past half term only 2 forms were not handed in before the deadline.... Mr Wellings now has the rather tricky job of putting the information together and start constructing the time table for next year. Over the next half term, we will be interviewing students about their options choices and checking some of the chosen combinations. Thanks for your support with this process.

Photochase!

This week at school we also had a photo-chase challenge that was shoe-horned into a 20 minute PM registration time. The idea behind this was to encourage students to work as a team to take as many photos from a list that I came up within the short time frame. This could have resulted in absolute chaos with students running all around the school but actually the Year 9's were brilliant and really came together in form teams. After the photos had been taken, uploaded and shared with me, one form came out triumphant! 9P managed to get all of the listed pictures and took 10 points towards the weekly inter-form competition that we have been running since term 1. Here are a few of the pictures:

Year 9 Inter-house Update

Over the past couple of weeks the Year 9 Inter-house activities have started to gain momentum and it is great to see so many pupils taking the opportunity to take part in some healthy competition. As always the Inter-house dodge-ball saw a great turn out from all houses. After some hard fought battles it was Mr O'Neil's Queen house that came out triumphant. His passion and enthusiasm on the sidelines was reminiscent of the legendary Mrs Bisby!

More recently, the Year 9 house teams took part in the hugely anticipated soft-ball competition. After the preliminary games, I believe that the final will be between Crest and Queen this Friday. No doubt Mr Finch (Head of Crest) would like to reaffirm his grasp on the house trophy again, although the new Head of Queen, Mr O'Neil, is certainly making a big impact with his supremely competitive Year 9 team....it is sure to be an interesting game!

Important Dates

IGCSE Options forms have been given out this week at school and now that pupils have had their subject taster sessions, tutor time activities, career sessions and options assembly, I am confident that they have all of the information needed to make the right choices for themselves. There is one more major event before the options forms need to be returned and it is absolutely fine for pupils to hold onto these forms until after the Options PTC where each faculty will be on hand to answer questions about their subjects. Please note that it is an open PTC. This means that we do not schedule appointments but all of the Year 9 teachers and Heads of Faculty will be available for you to drop by and discuss IGCSE Option choices as well as progress in particular subjects at school.

Tuesday 10th of February: Options PTC
Friday 13th of February: Deadline for Option forms to be handed in to form tutors.

Please do not hesitate in contacting me if you have any concerns or questions. Regards, Dr. Browning

HUMAN RIGHTS ENQUIRY

This week at school the Year 8 and 9 pupils were teamed up in house groups to research about different human rights. This is clearly a massively important topic for pupils to know about and is in line with the idea of developing empathy that is embedded in our positive education and school focus this year.

Pupils essentially had 2 days to prepare a concept and pitch to raise awareness of one particular human right. It was great to see all of the pupils really getting involved in these projects and the final products this year were very impressive. We have had professional photographers in school taking pictures this week and so plenty of great photos will become available soon. For now, here are a few from me from the free flow activity on Thursday in which pupils were learning about the right of privacy.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school! I hope everyone has had a great holiday and is well rested for a busy few weeks ahead. This week we have a Human Rights enquiry project going on. For this, Year 9 pupils will be teamed up with Year 8 pupils to choose a Huamn Right to focus on and find out about and then on Thursday and Friday the mixed Year group teams will have to present their right and ideas to advertise it to a panel of judges. More to follow on this..........

IMPORTANT GCSE Options Information:

We also have an important IGCSE options discussion evening FOR PARENTS ONLY this Thursday the 8th of January.  Mr Wellings and myself will be outlining the choices that pupils have to make and give some ideas about how parents can help their children in this process. The session will be held in the Grand Hall from 7.30-8.30pm

Activities to help pupils with their IGCSE subject options will begin next week. On Monday and Tuesday Year 9's will attend taster sessions for all of the different IGCSE subjects. Paper copies of the timetable for these taster sessions will be distributed during AM tutor time on Monday morning but you can see this now via the link below. Please note that pupils will be in tutor groups for the taster sessions and they will replace periods 3 and 4 on Monday and periods 1 and 2 on Tuesday.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/16kR_U7vZO7Y2qHECt7V8i9lyxbOebK5bMjm3EKCM_aw/edit?usp=sharing

Following these sessions pupils will have an opportunity to look through the IGCSE options e-book during tutor times and they will be encouraged to think carefully about their choices by completing various activities. There will also be an options assembly for pupils in the week starting Monday 19th of January. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Kind Regards, Dr, Browning
